Danewort, Berries
Sambucus ebulus
Effect: Strong antimicrobial activity against a range of pathogens in urinary tract infections. Reduces blood pressure. Berries are used as a laxative, diaphoretic and diuretic agent, for treating cancer. Jam made of berries is used against tuberculosis and hemorrhoids. Decoction of the roots is used in kidney disease and decoction of the flowers - for difficult urination and sweating. In our traditional medicine tea form the leaves of danewort is used against intestinal colic (6 to 8 leaves, finely chopped, boiled 10 min in 300 g of water. Drink 1 cup in morning, afternoon and evening before meals).
There are reports as well that danewort is effective in catarrh of the upper respiratory tract, in neuralgia, rheumatism in hives, gout. Thick extract Prepared from the fruit induces the appetite and has toning effect, stimulates haematopoietic and is used in cancer diseases. Danewort is also used as a topical remedy for snakebites and other insects by rubbing locally on the place till blood appears.
Warning: In large doses the plant is poisonous! Potent herb! Should be applied by prescription, with medical supervision!
Directions:
Infusion: 1 teaspoon of the herb is boiled for 10 minutes in 500 ml of water. Drink 120 ml before meals 4 times daily.
Alcohol extract: 1 part fruit to 5 parts alcohol. 120-30 drops in a glass of water twice daily before meals.
Jam of dried fruits: Fruits are cooked with a 1:1 sugar and 1 cup water. Apply half to one teaspoon in the morning on an empty stomach.
Jam of fresh fruit danewort / folk recipe /: Arrange one row of danewort fruit, one row of sugar and alter till the filling of the jar. Put it in sunlight with a cotton cloth on the neck of the jar. After 10 days cap it and preserve in the refrigerator. Apply half to one teaspoon in the morning on an empty stomach. Since the herb is very potent it should be applied under medical supervision. In the beginning of the application there might be dysentery and nausea. In apprehension of poisoning, immediately call your doctor.
Do not take in large quantities, start with 1/4 teaspoon for few days and gradually increase to 1 teaspoon.
