Evening primrose seeds

Oenothera biennis L., Evening Primrose

Evening primrose, sometimes called Night Primrose, is a flowering plant with beautiful "moon" flowers.

The plant gets its name because of its large fragrant flowers that bloom in the evening and are partially or completely closed during the day. Night primrose can thrive in a variety of adverse climatic conditions such as sandy soils, in dunes, meadows and also in wasteland. The roots, flowers, fruits and seeds of evening primrose have been used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes for centuries.

Application of Evening primrose seeds

Evening primrose is a versatile plant with many medicinal and culinary uses. The seeds can be inserted into baked goods or baked in the oven, or sprinkled as an alternative to black pepper. The seeds contain a variety of amino acids, including lysine, proline, aspartic acid, tyrosine, glycine, leucine, glutamic acid and serine. The active ingredient in evening primrose is one of the highest sources of GLA. This essential fatty acid is found in many parts of the body, including breast milk and the brain. Common medical uses include: PMS, breast pain, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatitis, mastalgia, acne, eczema, high blood pressure. It is used in cosmetics as a skin softener - it has a wonderful effect on atopic skin. Helps restore the health of brittle hair and nails.

The seeds are rich in primrose oil

Evening primrose oil is the oil obtained from the seeds of the evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis). The oil is usually thin, clear, light yellow and has a slight nutty smell. The oil is one of the richest natural sources of an omega 6 fatty acid called gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is responsible for the oil's health benefits. Traditionally, evening primrose oil has been referred to as the "cure-all" for its many healing properties. Evening primrose oil has rightly been called "the most sensational preventive discovery" after vitamin C. Direct consumption of the seeds, in the manner described, fully enriches the body with oils, vitamins, amino acids and fiber.

How to use Evening primrose seeds

1-2 tablespoons of evening primrose seeds are poured with 500 ml. boiling water. Leave to soak for 1 hour. It is strained. The decoction is drunk 150 ml 3 times a day before meals.

Use the strained seeds:

You can add the soaked seeds to your smoothie, oatmeal or simply sprinkle on your daily meal or salad.

You can also use the ground seeds for cosmetic purposes:

Face mask

To 3 tablespoons of evening primrose seed powder, add cold water to make a watery substance. Start heating it on low heat and bring it to a boil. Heat until you get a slurry. Set aside to cool and then apply on your face for 15 minutes, rinse with warm water.

Face and Body Scrub

To make a body/face scrub you need a base e.g. oil (evening primrose oil or other unrefined oil), honey or natural yogurt. Mix 2 tablespoons of evening primrose seed powder with a small amount of your base product to create a creamy consistency, then use as a scrub.
