Serenoa repens

Serenoa repens, known as Sao palmetto, is the only species classified in the genus Serenoa. It is a small, palm-type tree, reaching a maximum height of about 2.1–3.0 m. It is found in the subtropical belt of the southeastern United States, most commonly along the Atlantic coast in bays with sand hills.

Action:

The Sao Palmeto herb has a number of uses, most of which are related to it's effect over the testosterone synthesis. Decreased testosterone levels cause various ailments that can be alleviated by stabilizing the levels of this hormone. Some people believe that the palm prevents the breakdown of testosterone. When testosterone cannot be broken down naturally, hormone levels in the body rise.

Enlarged prostate
A number of studies show that the Sao Palmeto herb has a positive effect on the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland in the male reproductive system. As a man gets older and his testosterone levels decrease, it often happens that the prostate gland enlarges. An enlarged prostate can put pressure on the urethra, causing discomfort and other symptoms. They include:

- frequent urination,
- difficulty urinating,
- frequent nocturnal urination.
Sao Palmeto raises testosterone levels, which causes the prostate to shrink and relieve the urinary flow.

Prostate cancer
Elevated testosterone levels slow the growth of prostate cancer cells. For this reason, taking supplements containing the Sao Palmeto herb, in addition to traditional treatment, is recommended. If prostate cancer is suspected, consultation with a doctor is mandatory. In these cases it is very important to look for the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Libido and fertility
Testosterone plays a role in sexual desire in both men and women. It promotes fertility, and its normal levels stimulate the synthesis and formation of both sperm and eggs. Taking the Sao Palmeto herb when having libido disorders and pregnancy problems is recommended for both men and women.

Hair loss
When aging some men begin to lose part of their hair as a result of hormonal imbalance. This natural process is caused by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a byproduct of testosterone breakdown. Taking the Sao Palmeto herb by men who suffer hair loss is recommended as the it helps stabilize testosterone levels and slows down the hair loss process.

Mild inflammations
Benefits of taking the Sao Palmeto herb are observed in a number of other diseases, including:

- cough, colds and sore throat,
- bronchitis,
- headache,
- sleep problems.

The use of the Sao Palmeto herb in the treatment of mild inflammation is based on folk medicine, and research on the effect of the herb on these diseases is very limited.
