Hamamelis virginiana

Application: In susceptibility to varicose veins and hemorrhoids, diarrhea, bleedings.

Effect: Anti-inflammatory, bactericidal agent, astringent, has a softening effect, helps to dissolve blood clots, stops bleedings, suitable for those suffering from hemorrhoids, has analgesic effects, for treatment of varicose veins with complaints of feeling of heaviness in of calves, strengthens vascular walls.

Directions: Prepare a tincture 1:5 in 60% alcohol or brandy for 14 days. Internally apply 10 drops in 200 ml of water 3 times a day.

Description: Shrub reaching up to 6 m in height. Flowers are small and appear on leafless branches between December and February. Leaves appear after the flowers. Plant is also found under the name Virgin walnut.

Externally make compresses or baths with diluted tincture, in proportion 20 drops to 1 liter of water.

Decoction for compresses is prepared of 1 teaspoon of the herb boiled for 15 minutes with 400ml of water. Once cooled, strain and apply externally.

Contraindications: Do not partake internally for more than 40 days, as it influences the absorption of iron by the body and prolonged use of Hamamelis can lead to anemia.
