The name Diatomite comes from the name of the Diatomite. Diatoms are unicellular organisms that live in the oceans for about 300 million trillion years. They form a small shell of silicates that they extract from water. When diatoms die, this microscopic coating is deposited on the seafloor. Thousands of meters have been accumulated over the millennia. Over time, the oceans withdrew and these deposits were finally discovered. The compression and fossilization of the shells make them a chalky rock known as the cusp.
